Heritage in Moreland

Council acts to protect and enhance the rich history of Moreland. Heritage is an important part of Moreland’s past.

Heritage can be a piece of land, landscape, building(s) memorials, trees, gardens, parks, places of historical events, and spiritual and religious places. The heritage of Moreland includes all of these things – workers cottages, shopping strips, industrial sites, mansions and historic churches.

Most heritage in Moreland is important for the local community but some heritage is also important for the State of Victoria.

Council’s laws about heritage are usually for places dating from the earliest settlement of Moreland in the 1830s until 1945. More recent places may also be included.

Moreland heritage sites

Some heritage sites in Moreland are the Pentridge Prison Complex, Wiseman House, Glenroy, Wentworth House, Pascoe Vale South, Hoffman’s Brick and Pottery Works, Brunswick, and Lincoln Knitting Mills Coburg.

Some heritage precincts in Moreland are Barkly Street, East, Brunswick, Newlands Estate Precinct, Coburg, and Turner Street Precinct, Pascoe Vale.

For a brief list of properties in Moreland with a Heritage Overlay control, see the Moreland Planning Scheme online.

Sometimes new heritage sites are identified in Moreland. After public consultation, the Moreland Planning Scheme may be amended to include and protect new heritage sites. Contact Council to suggest a new heritage place: ask for the Strategic Planning Unit.

Is my home or building a heritage site?

Council identifies and protects heritage sites with a Heritage Overlay control.

Moreland Planning Scheme online lists all individually listed heritage sites and Heritage Precinct Overlays which include groups of properties also shown on the planning scheme maps.

You can contact Council’s Urban Development Branch to see if your home or building is a Heritage Overlay site or has a Heritage Precinct Overlay.

Planning Scheme Maps showing all Heritage Overlays can also be viewed online at  the Moreland Planning Scheme online or as a paper copy at  the Moreland Civic Centre, 90 Bell Street, Coburg.

How do I obtain more information about a heriatage listed property?

If your property is located within a Heritage Overlay and you would like more information about the significance of the property, see the Victorian Heritage Database (VHD).

The  Victorian Heritage Database, managed by Heritage Victoria, is an online database containing information about Victorian Heritage Places and Precincts including

  • statements of significance
  • physical descriptions
  • historical information
  • builder
  • architectural style
  • photographs, and
  • heritage overlay number.
